Our Story • Island Inspiration • Everyday Living
My journey to the Isle of Man began with a family visit in September 2022. I remember being struck by the island’s beauty, its mystical charm, and the deep sense of peace I felt while I was there. That first visit, and the ones that followed over the next year, planted a seed I didn’t know needed planting and opened up possibilities I hadn’t realised were there.
Within 18 months, I made the life-changing decision to retire from a long career in nursing, sell the family home of 28 years in Reigate, Surrey, and move to an island in the middle of the Irish Sea. It was a bold step, but one that felt completely right.
Life here is wonderful, but it calls for a certain kind of practical resilience. The weather often brings four seasons in one day, where a bright morning walk on the beach can quickly turn into a brisk coastal breeze or a sudden shower. I found myself wanting clothing that could move with that rhythm of island life — pieces that were effortless, versatile, and easy to layer.
Salt & Slate was born from that need. I wanted to create vests, T-shirts, and soft sweatshirts that felt just as right in a quiet café in Douglas as they did for the school run, relaxing at home, working in the office, or walking along a windswept beach. Our collection is designed with real life in mind, making it easy to add or shed a layer as the day changes.
More than just clothing, Salt & Slate is about everyday comfort, timeless simplicity, and pieces you will reach for again and again because they feel as good as they look. Inspired by island life, made for everyday living — wherever you are.
